Citibank and Lynntech, Inc. were awarded the first International Friendly Business Award, which was created through a partnership with the Bryan College Station Chamber of Commerce and the International Programs Office of Texas A&M in 2007 and sponsored by Wells Fargo Bank.
Citibank and Lynntech were honored for their commitment to building a “more welcoming environment” for international faculty scholars, students and other foreign visitors. Royce Hickman, CEO of the Bryan-College Station Chamber of Commerce, said the awards are the result of a long-term collaboration with Texas A&M.
“Our community has been blessed by the great wealth of diversity and culture that international students, faculty and scholars from Texas A&M and other international visitors bring to us,” Hickman said. “We are a community founded by foreign nationals such as Italians, Czechs, the Polish and others from Europe who braved a wilderness to carve out a place we now call the Brazos Valley. This award and the recognition it brings to companies in our community honors those who came before us as we endeavor to continue their legacy of building a strong and welcoming community.”
Bryan-College Station has now broadened the scope of what it means to become an international community with representatives from nearly 130 countries. In 2007-2008, the net contribution to the Texas economy by foreign students and their families was reportedly almost $1.1 billion, with nearly $65 million going to local community businesses. The Bryan-College Station community now hosts more than 4,400 international students and some 600 international faculty and staff who buy homes and autos and bring families into the area, including children who attend the local public and private schools.
The chamber has been working with the International Programs Office for years to find ways to enhance the welcoming environment of the community for all who come here. The International Friendly Business Award is an initiative of that partnership and was established in 2007 to recognize businesses that go out of their way to provide a welcoming business environment for international students, scholars and faculty and other international residents of the community.
“We believe this new award will raise awareness of the business needs of our international community and reward the initiative taken by businesses to help meet those needs,” Hickman said. “Anyone may nominate, but the nominee must be a member in good standing of the Bryan College Station Chamber of Commerce and complete a simple application justifying the nomination.”
A small business and a large business will be recognized. Recipients will receive a glass globe award for display at their place of business and be honored at the Brazos Valley Worldfest Nov. 14 at Wolf Pen Creek Park in College Station.
